The Butcher's Bill

For over a thousand years, since before the time of William the Conqueror, the people of Ireland struggled for their freedom.  Thousands of people were killed and suffered political repression and religious persecution. Many rebellions were attempted, always resulting in defeat. It was in the twentieth century that the 1916 Rising galvanized the people and led to the Irish War of Independence. An Ireland-wide revolt that, with some semblance of organization, overthrew Britain's rule yielding  The Irish Free State followed by a truly free Republic of Ireland for almost all of the island.  Even though the British were expelled, except in the six counties of Ulster which became Northern Ireland, serious and violent differences existed among the liberated people.  These differences led to a bloody civil war between those willing to accept the treaty with the United Kingdom, separating the six counties of Ulster and required  some form of an oath to the King of England, and those who did not.

These lists are, for the most part, a transcription of the work of other people who worked long and hard to assemble the information from primary government sources, newspapers, hospital records, and the recollections of participants and their families.  Of particular value was an outstanding site,  "Irish Medals", which is, so far as this writer can find, a virtually  complete record of the deaths in the Irish Wars of the early Twentieth Century.  It contains much more information on many individuals, the circumstances of  the  events, and political aspects.

One may ask, given that much of the information included here is available elsewhere, what is the purpose of these lists?  This internet offering is simply to permit the casual searcher to quickly find a name with minimal effort.

If one has comments they are welcome.  Questions  are also welcome, but this amateur's knowledge is slight.  Most will likely be placed on a comments page for others interested in the subject to read and answer.

Comments and Questions are welcome.
